The SUSTLIVES Project: Training internship at CNR-ISA for students from Niger and Burkina Faso

In the framework of the project SUSTLIVES – Sustaining and improving local crop patrimony in Burkina Faso and Niger for better Lives and Ecosystems, a six week training internship has been organised by CNR in collaboration with CIHEAM in Bari, University Abdou Moumouni in Niamey, Niger, and University Joseph Ki-Zerbo in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. The internship was held at the Institute of Sciences of Food Production of CNR in Bari (four week course) and Institute of Food Sciences of CNR in Avellino (two week course).

The eight trainees selected by the two African Universities, arrived in Avellino on 15th October 2025 and were enthusiastically welcomed by Dr Michelangelo Pascale, Director of the Institute, and the entire team of researchers participating in the project.

Dr Rosa Siciliano presented the main research topics and some of the projects underway at the Institute whose strategic objectives are in line with those of Sustlives. She also illustrated the internship program, mainly focused on the nutritional and functional aspects of neglected and underutilized plant species (NUS) of interest for the project, some relevant topics of food microbiology, and the most modern analytical methodologies applied to the structural and functional studies of food-derived bioactive compounds. The eight interns briefly presented their CVs and their roles within the Sustlives project.

The trainees showed great interest in the topics covered during the internship and actively participated in the theoretical and practical lessons held by the course lecturers.
