Michelangelo Pascale.<\/strong> Graduated in Chemistry at the Chemistry Department of University of Bari, Italy. From 1998 to 2006 has been Researcher at the Institute of Sciences of Food Production (ISPA), Bari, Italy (formerly Institute of Toxins and Mycotoxins from Plant Parasites-ITEM) of the National Research Council of Italy (CNR); from  2007 to 2009 Senior Researcher at ISPA-CNR and from from 2010 to 2021 Director of Research at ISPA-CNR. From 01\/02\/2021 is Director of the Institute of Food Sciences (ISA), CNR.<\/p>\n
Main area of expertise: food safety and analytical chemistry. Has over twenty five-years of experience in analytical methods for mycotoxin detection. Has specific expertise on toxigenicity of fungi; chemical characterization of natural toxins; occurrence of mycotoxins in food commodities; effect of fungicides on cereal diseases and mycotoxin accumulation; effect of food processing on mycotoxins; effect of industrial-scale cleaning equipment on mycotoxin reduction; development and validation of analytical methods for mycotoxins in food, feed and biological fluids; organization of collaborative studies for validation of methods for the analysis of mycotoxins. At present is engaged in the development and validation of rapid analytical methods, based on LC-MS, immunoassays, aptamers, e-nose, infrared spectroscopy, for the detection of mycotoxins in foodstuffs and feedstuffs, on the assessment of new strategies to reduce the levels of mycotoxins in post-harvest and on development of methods for food authenticity.<\/p>\n
Involved in several national and EU-funded projects relevant to mycotoxins and scientific responsibility in several national\/international projects of ISPA.<\/p>\n
During his career he carried out some research periods abroad. Worked at VICAM L.P. (Watertown, MA, USA), at the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, Universidad Nacional de Rio Cuarto (Argentina) and at the Institute of BioScience and Technology Centre for Supermolecular Technology, Cranfield University at Silsoe (UK).Delegate of the International Atomic Energy Agency for the Assessment of laboratory infrastructures of the Toxicology Department – Indonesian Research Centre for Veterinary Science (BBALITVET, Bogor-Indonesia) and identification of equipment\/training needs. Member of the IARC Working Group on \u201cAflatoxin Control Measures: A Basis for Improved Health in Developing Countries\u201d, International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), Lyon, France. Technical Cooperation expert of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for the organization of Training Course in Zambia and Chile on \u201cMethod development\/validation for mycotoxin analysis in food and feed\u201d. Expert Mission of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on enhancing the capacities of the \u201cOffice National de S\u00e9curit\u00e9 Sanitaire des Produits Alimentaires (ONSSA)\u201d in Tanger, Morocco, 21-25 October 2019.<\/p>\n
Has served as an organizer and instructor of several international Workshop-Training courses on \u201cMethods for mycotoxin detection in the food\/feed chain\u201d (Bari-Italy 2006, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2014, 2017; Ankara-Turkey 2010, 2011; Yogyakarta-Indonesia 2013; Lusaka-Zambia 2017, Santiago-Chile 2018; Wuhan-China 2019).<\/p>\n
Member of Scientific Committee of International Conferences on food safety and speaker at several national and international Conferences\/Symposiums (also as invited speaker). From 2009, member of Editorial Board of Food Additives and Contaminants – Part B. From 2015 co-editor of the Topical Collection “Biorecognition Assays for Mycotoxins”, Toxins, MDPI.<\/p>\n
Author of 180 papers in peer reviewed journals (including 105 in ISI Web of Science), 22 book chapters (9 international, 13 national), and 225 contributions at national and international Conferences\/Symposiums. ORCID<\/em>: 0000-0002-3898-1030<\/p>\n
